The Oculus Horti Hypothesis
On the Reciprocal Relationship Between Gardening & Drawing
by Johanna Tagada Hoffbeck
The Oculus Horti Hypothesis is a new limited-edition artist publication by Johanna Tagada Hoffbeck, published by Poetic Pastel Press. Designed as an intimate, movable 4-page format, this tactile, playful publication reflects the artist's approach to season, nature, and playful observation.
The Oculus Horti Hypothesis, suggested and composed by Johanna Tagada Hoffbeck, translates literally from Latin to "The Eye of the Garden". At the core of The Gardening Drawing Club and Johanna Tagada Hoffbeck's transdisciplinary practice—which frequently explores togetherness, horticulture, the beauty and fragility of life, as well as nature symbiosis—this concept serves as a philosophical framework.
The artist printed and hand-assembled it in May 2026 for the Colorama Riso School at the London Centre for Book Arts. This new publication by the indie imprint Poetic Pastel Press emphasises sustainable, artisanal craftsmanship, featuring vibrant Risograph printing (rice bran inks) on FSC-certified paper and bound with a classic and fully recyclable split pin fastener.
